How we clean Brandon's older block homes

Brandon has no city hall of its own, and much of it is subdivisions of single-story concrete block houses finished in stucco. Plenty of them sit on streets off Lumsden Road and Parsons Avenue, under live oaks that have had years to spread. Inside, many of these homes still have popcorn ceilings, and ceramic tile laid with wide grout lines. Both hold dirt in ways a quick wipe never reaches.

A popcorn ceiling cannot be scrubbed. Water softens the texture and it falls in wet clumps. So we take cobwebs and dust off it dry, with a soft brush. Wide grout is the opposite problem. Mop water carries dirt down into the joints, and over time the grout turns gray even when the tile looks fine. On a deep clean we scrub the grout lines with a brush instead of mopping over them.

Brandon sits on sandy soil. The sand rides in on shoes and paws, then collects in sliding door tracks and along the baseboards. Left there, it grinds into the finish on wood and vinyl plank floors every time someone walks across it. So we vacuum out the door tracks and work along the edges of each room, where a vacuum pushed down the middle never reaches. The middle of the floor is the easy part.

Brandon's wet summers leave mildew in bathrooms

Brandon is inland, so there is no salt air to fight. What it gets instead is heavy humidity from late spring into fall, and a thunderstorm most summer afternoons. The air conditioner pulls a lot of that water out of the air, but not all of it. Damp air collects wherever a house gets the least fresh air. In a typical Brandon house that means the bathrooms, especially a hall bath with a weak exhaust fan or no window at all.

Mildew starts as small black specks in the grout and along the caulk where the tub meets the wall. A quick spray and wipe makes it look gone for a day. It comes back within the week because it is still living down in the grout. Left for months, it stains caulk so deeply that no product will lift it. At that point the only fix is new caulk.

Spring brings a different mess. The live oaks across Brandon drop pollen and brown tassels for weeks, and the yellow dust comes in every time a door opens. It settles on window sills and on top of ceiling fan blades, then turns sticky as the humidity climbs back up. On a spring visit we spend extra time on the sills and fans. The bathrooms still get their full scrub, because mildew grows here all year.

Not everyone in Brandon lives in a house. Brandon Boulevard and the streets around the mall are lined with apartment complexes and townhouses. A small kitchen gets cooked in as often as a big one.
